Bouldering and painting in Joshua Tree National Park

Bouldering and painting in Joshua Tree National Park

I slept in the bed of a Ram Truck under the stars

March 4, 2020

I just couldn’t go back to Chicago.

Two days of sun in the last month in Chicago and a few sunny days in Palm Springs with friends, and every fiber of my being insisted “I can’t go back.” I CAN’T GO BACK! I’ve often THOUGHT that on vacation but never acted on it. This time I thought, “you’re almost 64, you don’t have work or anything to go back for… if not now, when?” So 4 hours before my flight, I banked my miles (thank you Southwest), found an air b&b that would allow art making (as long as I didn’t leave any paint splatter or indication that I was there!) and rented a full size Dodge Ram Truck!

Tar Lines Installation

Riding my bike down a country road last year, I was stopped in my tracks by the most graceful tar lines covering the cracks in the asphalt. We’ve all seen these tar lines pretty much everywhere, our entire lives, and mostly ignore them. But this day, they seemed to jump off the road.

I respond to organic shapes, often dancing their lines and shapes with my body, when out walking in the woods or along a road. My paintings reflect this dance, and when I saw those tar lines, I felt them dancing inside me. I got off my bike and took photos and a video walking down the middle of the road.
